Volcanic in origin, Dominica is the largest and most mountainous of the Windward Islands. CREDIT CARDS – Major credit cards and travelers’ checks are accepted by most hotels, restaurants, car rental agencies and tour operators.

CURRENCY – Local currency is the Eastern Caribbean Dollar (EC$2.67 = US$1.00). However, U.S. dollars are accepted all over the island.

DRINKING WATER – The water is safe to drink, but bottled water is readily available if you prefer.

ELECTRICITY – 220/240 volts, 50 cycles. A transformer is required for American appliances. Outlets are three-prong European-style. Adapters may be needed.

TIME – Atlantic Standard Time, one hour ahead of Eastern Standard Time.

WHAT TO WEAR – Lightweight, casual clothing is appropriate throughout the year, with a sweater for the evening or nights in the mountains. Swimwear is acceptable on beaches only and should not be worn on the street. Bring walking shoes and rain gear for rainforest hikes.
